"Visual Health and Comfort Testing for LED Lighting Products" Is Set to Be Implemented, Marking a New Phase in Which Healthy Lighting Moves from "Conceptual Advocacy" to "Scientific Quantification"

As a new type of light source, LEDs have been widely adopted in lighting, displays, and other related lighting products. “Light health” or “healthy lighting” has become a key direction for the industry’s development, and the impact of LED lighting on the health of human visual function has emerged as a focal point and hot topic of concern across society.


To objectively and quantitatively evaluate the characteristics of the human body’s photobiological response to light, thereby identifying the health effects of LED lighting products on the human body (specifically the human visual system) under different light quality conditions, this standard aims to promote the development of “people-centered” lighting technologies in China’s semiconductor lighting industry, enhance product competitiveness, provide strong support for the prevention and control of myopia among children and adolescents, and safeguard visual health.The "Testing of Visual Health and Comfort for LED Lighting Products" (GB/T 44441-2024), proposed and administered by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China and drafted with the participation of the China National Institute of Standardization and the Zhongguancun Key Joint Innovation Laboratory for Semiconductor Lighting, among others, will officially take effect on March 1, 2025.

"Testing for Visual Health and Comfort of LED Lighting Products" specifies the evaluation requirements and testing methods for the visual health and comfort of LED lighting products. It comprehensively assesses the health impacts of LED lighting products on the human body using cellular and molecular testing, objective physiological indicator testing, and biochemical analysis of neurotransmitters. It applies to indoor LED lighting systems.

Under the lighting conditions of the product being tested, the following tests, among others, are conducted:

Fundus Retinal Cell Viability (CV) Test

Used to quantitatively evaluate the effects of LED lighting products on retinal cell characteristics.

Visual Comfort (VICO) Test

Used to evaluate the physiological effects of LED lighting products on human visual function (short-term physiological effects) and to objectively and quantitatively assess the impact of LED lighting products on visual health during visual tasks of a specified duration.

Test for Changes in Fundus Blood Flow Density

A supplementary test method used in conjunction with the VICO test to evaluate the effects of LED lighting products on the blood flow characteristics in the human retina.

Testing of Typical Brain Neurotransmitters


The release of GB/T 44441-2024 marks a new phase in healthy lighting, transitioning from “conceptual advocacy” to “scientific quantification.” In the future, LED lighting products should use this standard as their core guideline and optimize products and services in three areas:
  • Technical Upgrades: Comply with VICO and CV classification requirements to reduce flicker and glare, ensuring products meet visual comfort standards.
  • Scenario Adaptation: For settings such as classrooms, offices, and medical facilities, develop dynamic circadian lighting solutions that incorporate non-visual indicators—such as melatonin suppression rates—to enhance health benefits for users.
  • International Competitiveness: Leveraging the standard’s first-mover advantage in technology, promote international certification of products to secure a leading position in the health lighting market.
