Can Light Really Heal the Mind? | Uncovering the Science Behind Light Therapy for Depression

Nighttime Protection: Reducing exposure to 400–500 nm blue light two hours before bedtime can increase melatonin secretion by 30%and improve sleep efficiency by 23%.
A longitudinal study by the UK Biobank involving 87,000 participants showed that adequate daylight exposure reduces the risk of depression by 20%, while excessively bright nighttime lighting increases the risk of anxiety by 30%.
Light Activates the Brain’s “Happiness Factors”
Light signals travel through the retina–locus coeruleus–medial geniculate nucleus pathway to facilitate the synergistic regulation of multiple neurotransmitters, stimulating the synthesis of serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine—referred to as the “mood stabilizer” and “fuel for motivation,” respectively.

Dopamine (DA): Red light (630 nm) effectively activates DA neurons in the nucleus accumbens, promoting dopamine release; the improvement rate for patients’ “anhedonia” reaches 58%.
Mitochondrial Repair: Near-infrared light (810 nm) activates cytochrome c oxidase, increasing ATP production efficiency in the prefrontal cortex by 40% and reversing energy metabolism damage in neurons caused by chronic stress.
How Does Light “Extinguish” the Volcano of Depression?
A research team at Jinan University discovered that light signals traveling through the neural pathway from the retina → lateral geniculate body → lateral habenula can suppress abnormal discharges in the lateral habenula—a nucleus known as the “depression volcano” due to its excessive activation.In animal models, targeted light stimulation reduced depression-like behavior by 42%, a mechanism directly linked to the suppression of activity in the “sad neurons” within the lateral habenula.
From the Lab to Real Life: The Scientific Practice of Light Therapy
Currently, light therapy, as a non-pharmacological treatment, is widely used to treat conditions such as seasonal affective disorder, perinatal depression, and bipolar disorder. Its efficacy is comparable to that of antidepressant medications, with fewer side effects.
A 2024 study published in *JAMA Psychiatry*, which included 858 patients, showed that the symptom remission rate in the group receiving medication combined with light therapy was 60.4%, significantly higher than the 38.6%in the medication-only group, with the complete remission rate increasing by 17.2%.
The therapeutic value of light lies not only in its scientific mechanisms but also in its accessibility and patient-centered approach. Compared to medications that often cost thousands of yuan, light therapy is more affordable and carries no risk of addiction. Currently, clinical guidelines in countries such as Canada and China have listed light therapy as the preferred adjunctive treatment for depression.
